I have purchased several homes and the timer of choice by landscape professionals has been the Hunter Pro-C controller. When I remodeled my home this year, I decided to check the available options for watering controls and I was really interested in a WiFi type controller this time. I looked at several models on Amazon and read the reviews and checked their capabilities. While the ability to control the watering schedule on the fly using a smart phone was a great option, I elected in the end to purchase this Hunter controller instead. Here are my reasons:1. The controller needs to be standalone from any Wifi , since if I decided to sell my home, I do not want any buyer completely to be married to any particular phone or software. Keeps it simple.2. The outdoor box and lock is great for your landscaper to operate without the need to enter your house or garage to adjust or operate the system. I don’t think any of the competitors have got this approach right, or anywhere close to what they already offer.3. The Solar Sync feature keeps the system shut down during rainy days. This feature finally cures that problem that so many systems in the market fail to provide. Even the internet monitoring systems are really not adequate, since they do not take into account the exact micro-climate of my particular yard. The local weather is really not the weather reported by the internet.4. The controller is easy to use, has tons of features that most of those internet controllers still fail to provide. A nice big dial with clear easy to read display is good enough for me. I like the soak feature that allows you to water in many mini-cycles to allow the water to penetrate the soil without runoff.5. This controller is pretty cheap, when you consider all you get for the money. A pretty nice outdoor proof box, controller and a very well thought out user interface and control flexibility.6. Easy to command individual stations for immediate watering, that you may want to do when working on the irrigation lines.

So…full disclosure – I am not a licensed electrician. The installation instructions point out in no uncertain terms that one is required to deploy this unit, but in the current unpleasantness an electrician would be four weeks and $$$$ if one could be had. This controller is replacing a Rain-Dial unit that I have always mildly disliked but it did its job fairly well until it could go on no longer, and props to the Rain-Dial company because this particular one had been installed incorrectly yet soldiered on for many years. Be aware, good reader, that when replacing an outdoor irrigation controller one should match the old and new units to their power and controller risers. The Rain-Dial power input comes into the right and the controller wires come into the left of the box. The Hunter is the reverse, and required some conduit-twisting and repositioning to get it mounted in the same space. One of the things that impressed me most about the Hunter Pro-C is that it is incredibly easy to disassemble into its various components to make mounting easy, and is easy to reassemble when ready. The Rain-Dial was not so forgiving but since it was being removed anyway, I probably was not very gentle with it. There is no way that I will ever need sixteen stations, but this unit can be expanded that far at will. It is also incredibly easy to program, and once the unit was powered up the programming took less than five minutes. Now, this particular system does not have internet connectivity and I see that as a positive thing. I do not believe that as of 2022 the marriage of irrigation controllers and the internet has achieved full reliability. On a related note, if one is needing security for their irrigation timer then a dedicated cabinet needs to be used. The Hunter Pro-C does come with a locking door, but the hinge-wire is so easy to remove that it seems pointless other than to provide some weatherproofing of the box.The seller was fantastic in all ways, and I have posted that in a separate space.

Easy to install and operate. Much cheaper putting it in myself

  5. Richard

Easy installation, worked as advertised an updated model of my old one that lasted 23 years. Looking for 20 plus year out of this model.

  6. Lynn SLynn S

Needed to replace my old one and this unit provides lots of flexibility and is quality. I purchased a rain sensor (not hooked up yet) because it has terminals for that. You can remove the cover by lifting out the hinge pin. You can also open up the control panel on its hinge to access the inside for connecting wires and (My Favorite) has a back up battery so you don’t loose your program in a power outage. Battery is a 3V the size of a nickel. My old unit had a 9V connected by a wired terminal that failed. You can use it for more than sprinklers, it will do outdoor lighting too. I’ll update when I have checked out the rain sensor.
